... is the most beautiful town in this province.
i was fortunate enough to be there last weekend for the last day of race week (sailing) which was my favorite week of the summer.
unfortunately, for the last few years, i've missed race week because showtimes in antigonish and week.
i sat on a rock on freda's beach and watched all the boats come in from the last race, and i have to tell you, at least 100 boats floating into the harbour with the sunset behind it. obviously, breath-taking.
afterwards, i took in the children's show at the chester playhouse. they were doing cheaper by the dozen. i love the playhouse, because it was my second home, and where i developed by love for the recording arts and sound design. ALSO, i love the playhouse because i'm treated like bloody royalty there. michael ondaatje is the king, and i am the queen. every summer, since the age of 9 (and before i moved to antigonish at 16) i spent almost everyday at the theatre, taking part in the summer theatre school or working backstage. my first job was when i was 12 years old, working as the sound designer on 'the mousetrap' by agatha christie. the manager of the theatre lied about my age and told them i was 16 so i would get the job. they didn't find until it was my 12th birthday, and someone bought me a drink. i drank it, enjoying it thoroughly. my mother grabbed the glass out of my hand and scolded the person for buying a 12 year old an alcoholic beverage.
when i left the playhouse, i had contributed to about 30 shows in 7 years. and i had become friends with people twice my age, and gained their respect. nothing is better than being a 13 year old assistant stage manager telling 40 year olds what to do and having them listen.
i think if i moved back to chester, i would always fit into the same place at the chester playhouse that i had before, except now, i'm able to drink with cast mates and crew members at parties. which is comforting. it's nice to know that somewhere i'm considered a god sent.
i'll be back in chester tomorrow night, to see 'shroom! the last musical'. written by malcolm calloway and jan morrison, the geniuses behind 'death! the musical' (a musical about the hilarious misadventures of dead people at the 'afterlife bar and grill') i can't wait.
